Donate a Christmas Gift to a Child in Need
Christmas Toy Appeal 2021 by Liverpool Homeless Football Club
Christmas Toy Appeal 2021
Every year Liverpool Homeless Football Club runs a Christmas Toy Appeal, collecting presents to donate to children living in hostels and domestic abuse units. Over the years, this appeal has been a great success providing so many children across Merseyside with presents to unwrap on Christmas Day.
The Story behind our Christmas Toy Appeal - How it all Began
Christmas is fast approaching and here at Liverpool Homeless Football Club, the excitement is building. There is always a buzz in the office at this time of year as our team get to work, organising, collecting, sorting, packing, and delivering parcels right across Merseyside.
Our Christmas toy appeal began in 2008 when one of our female Futsal team members arrived at training visibly upset. She confided in one of our volunteers that she was feeling depressed due to the pressures that Christmas brings.
At the time she was living in a domestic abuse refuse hostel with her children. After fleeing her abusive partner, she found herself with no home, no job, no money, and her claim for benefits was still being processed. She had three children to clothe and feed, and for the first time ever she was dreading Christmas.
It was this situation that prompted our volunteer, Ste Barton, to set the wheels in motion and he immediately organised a collection of toys for the woman’s children and some small gifts for her. The joy and relief on the woman’s face were enough to melt any heart. And so, the LHFC Christmas toy appeal was born.
Every year we are overwhelmed by the generosity of the Liverpool people as we are inundated with toys, pyjamas, and toiletries. Our drivers love “playing Santa” and dropping sacks of toys and goodies to families living in homeless shelters and domestic abuse units.
The LHFC motto is “More than just football” and community is at the heart of everything that we do. Christmas is an ideal time to live up to our beliefs and demonstrate our ethos.
How to Donate This year
This year we need your help more than ever. Due to the current situation and new restrictions, the way we collect and distribute toys will be a little different this Christmas. We have created an Amazon Wish List of toys from which you can purchase, and they will be posted directly to our drop-off point. By purchasing a present from our wish list, you can make a real difference in someone’s life at Christmas. The children living in hostels and domestic abuse units are aged 0-18 and we often need extra gifts for teenagers, who enjoy the gifts as much as the younger children. The Amazon Wish List offers a range of gifts for all ages.
Donating this year will make a real difference to the children who through no fault of their own are suffering.
