On the 23rd February 2012 LHFC put on a special event for one of their funders; Sport Relief. It was a sunny day and there was a tangible buzz of excitement around the Powerleague on Whittle Street as the players began to arrive. Today LHFC we were welcoming comic legend and ‘local boy done good’ John Bishop into our midst.
John Bishop was touring the country visiting local projects that Sport Relief had funded in the last year. We were particularly honoured because John had specifically asked to visit Liverpool Homeless Football Club to witness first hand how the project is changing people’s lives.
Once again we must thank the Liverpool County FA as well as local coaches (and LHFC volunteers) Gary Thomas & Stephen Hawking for putting on a coaching session. Despite John Bishop being only one week away from attempting his epic Sport Relief Challenge, he was more than happy to slip into his football kit and get involved with the session.
After a decent warm up John took part in a number of small sided games as the BBC captured some footage of the lads in action. The games were, as usual, refereed by LHFC’s Craig Meddings and played in the true spirit of the game.
Most of the players got a chance to either play alongside or against John and it was a true honour to have him down there. The BBC were filming and recording for BBC Radio One Chris Moyles show as well as an hour long Sport Relief Documentary dubbed ‘John Bishop’s Week of Hell’.
Please see our flickr account (on the right hand side of the site) to view all the pictures from the day.
We are very excited to confirm that the documentary will be showed this week on Thursday 22nd March on BBC 1 at 21:00. We hope that it captures the enthusiasm of the day and demonstrates how LHFC is changing lives through football. We know John was impressed and we are looking forward to him coming back.
As well as expressing our gratitude to John Bishop for taking time to visit us, we would also like to thank Sport Relief and the BBC.
